This week opened with the wonderful news that a tumor in the lung of a much-loved friend and member of West Hill was benign. A week or so ago, as the medical diagnosis was still pending, that friend asked me to rewrite the song Amazing Grace. Since Scott has already adapted the original words for use at West Hill, I chose to go the whole rewrite route.
But it was also a week of incredible violence. Baltimore was broken and bruised by the racial barriers that threaten to destroy what is good in so many, many hearts.
And so, while this one is for you, my friend, it is also for those too many hearts this week has wounded. May it find a place in yours.

Hymn Tune: New Britain
Traditional Song: Amazing Grace
<
p style=”text-align: center;”>When love first stretched a human heart,
emerged from deep within,
our lives were changed forevermore;
that time must come again.
<
p style=”text-align: center;”>For quick as love did fear arise
and work to bring love down.
Its shadows lurk in troubled eyes
and peace is nowhere found.
<
p style=”text-align: center;”>Before another moment wanes,
may we our love renew,
and pledge to build up what remains
of all that’s good and true.
<
p style=”text-align: center;”>For only we can love and care,
commit to duty’s call,
remember all that’s right and fair,
and vanquish fear for all.
<
p style=”text-align: center;”>May love emerge, forever strong;
those bound in fear, released!
And we, inspired, shall end the wrongs,
love ever to increase.

Thank you, for the much appreciated timely verses.
You did a lovely job of renewing this song.
Beautiful work. I just sang it. It’s a long time since I sang to that melody…..thanks.
Thank you Gretta. This is one of Karen’s and my most favourite melodies. Love the words. I cried.
